    Children of Men

Is a 2006 dystopian (nl: het tegenovergestelde van een utopie) thriller film directed by Alfonso Cuarón. It is based on P.D. James's novel.

    The story:
The film opens in London in the year 2027, a world where no child has been born since 2009. The day opens with news that the world's youngest citizen, an 18-year-old, had been stabbed to death by a disgruntled fan to whom he had refused to give his autograph. Theo Faron (played by Clive Owen), an alcoholic former political activist who now works as a bureaucrat at the Ministry of Energy, is indifferent to the news; he buys a coffee from a shop that is moments later blown up by a bomb, an act which the government blames on an outlawed "terrorist" group, The Fishes.

The Britain of 2027 is a tired, grey and polluted place. An authoritarian nationalist government rules by means of a police state; immigration is illegal and refugees ("fugees") are rounded up at tube stations and deported to internment camps. Fertility testing is compulsory, and the government gives out anti-depressants as part of rations. Suicide pills are openly and legally marketed, under the brand name "Quietus". Low-level civil unrest is common; buses and trains windows are enclosed with wire mesh, the reason of which becomes quickly apparent when Theo's train out of London is attacked by a gang of vagrants.

On his return to London , Theo is kidnapped by members of The Fishes. The leader of The Fishes offers Theo money in exchange for permit papers for one of The Fishes, an African refugee girl, to reach the coast...

... the girl is 8 months pregnant.

    Howl's Moving Castle

Is an Academy Award nominated (I've got no idea if they actually won the thing) Japanese anime, Romance/Fantasy film based on Diana Wynne Jones' novel. The movie is directed by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli.
    The story:
18-year-old Sophie works in a hat shop and lacks confidence and direction. Her chance encounter with the handsome but mysterious wizard Howl results in Sophie being turned into a 90-year-old woman by the vain and manipulative Witch of the Waste. On self-imposed exile, Sophie finds shelter in Howl's moving castle; a mobile, chaotic ensemble of metal scraps but a feat of magical engineering nonetheless. For example, the front door of the castle is magically connected to several buildings in different parts of the country, where Howl maintains a different identity at each one. Inside the castle, Sophie encounters Markl, Howl's eight-year-old apprentice, an animated scarecrow whom Sophie names Turniphead, and Calcifer, a feisty, smart-talking fire demon who plays a key role in Howl's intrinsic (nl: wezelijk), is the source of the castle's power to move, forced to work for Howl because of a spell that binds him to the castle. Sophie's love and support comes to have a major impact on Howl, who, while a grown man, is still a boy in many ways.
When summoned by his nation to help fight a was with a neighbouring kingdom, Howl is at first afraid to respond, believing the summons to be a trap set by the king's head sorceress, his old mentor Madame Suliman. Sophie agrees to go to the capital city and pose as Howl's mother, in order to convince Suliman to leave Howl alone; Meanwhile, after giving her a magic ring for protection, Howl followwed behind her in disguise. However, just when Suliman had cornered both of them, Howl used his magic to help Sophie escape on a flying machine.
Unknown to Sophie, the self-confidence she has gained since being cursed, along with her developing affection towards Howl, has caused the spell to begin reversing itself, returning herself little by little to her original age.

    Right at your door

It begins on a beautiful, sunny morning in Los Angeles, where Brad (Rory Cochrane) has just kissed his wife, Lexi (Mary McCormack), off to work and started his day when the radio reports the detonation of a bomb. Announcements of additional explosions and an ominous, possibly toxic, cloud blowing ash across the L.A. basin quickly follow. With roads immediately closed off and phone contact elusive, Brad makes the decision to seal himself into his home, accomplishing the task with the assistance of a neighbor's handyman, Alvaro (Tony Perez), while awaiting his wife's return until...

Right at your door perfectly portrays the realities of this kind of attack - the isolation and fear, the panic, the frustration, and the media misinformation. When authority arrives, the anticipated help may, in fact, be anything but.

    The Wicker Man

My brothers Birthday is on the 6th of September, but, something went wrong and it got posted on the 7th... Never mind me...

Last Tuesday I went to the movie theater with Jelle (no not Jella!) one of the night shift guys. We went to see The Wicker Man. This is a remake the 1973 British film with the same name. It is supposed to be a Horror movie but I nearly wet myself watching it.

    The Storie:
Police officer Edward Malus (Nicolas Cage - the man with the 1000 faces who all look the same) receives a letter from his former fiancée, Willow Woodward (Kate Beahan - pretty girl with impressive eyes), asking him to come to a small Pacific Northwest island, to investigate the disappearance of her daughter Rowan. Upon the island, he discovers that the island is populated by a secretive matriarchal pagan community ruled over bu Sister SummersIsle.
All the women on the island are hostile, and the few men are all silent. Malus questions the inhabitants of the island about the missing child, only to be told that she was burned to death in an accident.
Willow warned him, that nothing is what it seems to be... and she is right!

The Wind That Shakes The Barley

(I'm sorry to all because of the lack of new Blog items. I try to update my Blog every 2 days, but my Laptop went bonkers and now I have to wait until I've got some spare time after work in order to update my green monster)

Tuesday 29-08-2006 I went to see The Wind That Shakes The Barley. Everyone knows there are no Dutch subtitles available in a Belfast movie theatre. So this means I have to see the movie again, and this time with subtitles! The accent is not as bad as the Belfast one, but still... I can understand the story but I miss the subtle innuendos.

The Wind That Shakes The Barley:

The Wind That Shakes the Barley is a 2006 Irish film set during the Irish War of Independence (1919–21) and the subsequent Irish Civil War of 1922–23. The title refers to a line from a song by 19th century author Robert Dwyer Joyce. The film tells the story of a small group of Irish Republican Army activists and in particular, of two brothers.

Damien (Cillian Murphy) is about to leave Ireland for his medical studies in London while his brother Teddy is an active IRA member. After witnessing an act of resistance to the daily violence of the Black and Tans, he decides however that it is worth fighting back and joins the IRA in a guerrilla war against British paramilitary forces. When the peace treaty is agreed, the two brothers find themselves pitted against one another. Teddy, who is involved in the organization of the new Irish Free State, wishes everyone to support peace. Damien however deems that this peace treaty is not what he has fought for, and that it will "only change the colour of the flag", the oppressed remaining so while the elite is replaced. This is the outbreak of the Irish Civil War, when the men in a uniform are now Irish. Although the new Irish Free State army turns as violent as their predecessors, their violence is now directed towards their former comrades. Atrocities are committed on both sides.

    Lady In The Water

Tuesday night we went to see The Lady In The Water. The movie was a bit weird, but nice. I think I have to see it a nother time before I get everything. No subtitles you see :)

    The story:
Cleveland Heep (Giamatti), a stuttering apartment superintendent, rescues a girl named Story swimming in the complex's pool. He thinks she is a normal young woman. When he discovers that she is actually a character from a bedtime story who is trying to make the journey back to her home, the Blue World. He starts working with his tenants to protect his new friend from the creatures that are determined to keep her in our world (by killing her).

She has a message for mankind.

    Chick flick!

Who ever saw Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Mans Chest knows what I mean when I say "GOD... He is gorgeous!"... And I'm not talking about the Captain of The Flying Dutchman!

Monday night Iain and I went to see the Pirates of the Caribbean part 2. It was really worth the lack of sleep.
Some people think there were to many special effects, and that is was not as funny as the first one. But I disagree on that. The only thing I thought was a bit weird was the ending. The ting I missed about the ending was the sign that said "to be continued"... Now it is to obvious that there is a 3rd part coming. Witch is not my kind of thing.

The funniest thing about the movies was not in the movie... It was one of my friends who saw the movie 2 times and asked me to explain it... hahahahahahahaha
